Mazel Tov to the 2026 Unsung HERO Award Winner: Ben Gershowitz – The Associated

This award recognizes a staff person who supports their organization with Heart, Excellence, Reliability and Optimism. The winner of the Unsung HERO award demonstrates their commitment to their work to build relationships and ensure the essential success of their organization. Regardless of tenure, this award honors an employee who is the backbone of your organization, who goes above and beyond their job role to care about the overall functioning of the organization and the people that surround them.

Ben exemplifies the very definition of an unsung hero. His work happens largely behind the scenes, yet its impact is felt every single day by employees, guests, agencies and community members across the Associated’s more than 25 facilities.

Through his dedication, steady leadership and quiet commitment to excellence, Ben demonstrates an extraordinary level of care for people, pride in his work and deep stewardship of our community’s physical and historical assets.

His priority is the safety and well-being of all those who work or step into our buildings.  He is available when any challenge arises from floods to fires, to selecting appropriate homes for individuals with developmental disabilities, to working with contractors making sure the job is done right.

Ben’s demeanor reflects warmth, professionalism, and approachability. He treats each agency as a valued partner, ensuring that their unique needs are met. His inclusive approach fosters collaboration and shared ownership, making agencies feel supported rather than managed.

Ben consistently embraces innovation and forward-thinking solutions. With every major project, including the realization of the Goldsmith campus, he worked tirelessly, bringing his expertise, steady presence and problem-solving skills to the success of each effort.

Ben’s impact is profound, even when it is unseen. He does not seek recognition; He simply focuses on doing the work the right way, every time.
