Remembering Marc Wernick, z”l: Leading with Inclusion and Heart

On December 5, Marc Wernick—a beloved Baltimore community leader and alumnus of the Na’aleh Accelerate program for emerging leaders—passed away. Marc was known for his warmth, generosity, and boundless kindness. He taught us so much about inclusion, dignity, and the beauty of our diverse Jewish community. Through his leadership and his way of showing up for others, Marc made us better—stronger, more compassionate, and more connected.

What follows is a written tribute by Alaine Jolicoeur honoring Marc’s life, leadership, and enduring impact on our community. His memory is a blessing, and his legacy continues to guide us

We Baltimoreans have lost a remarkable leader in Marc Howard Wernick, a genuine, once-in-a-generation figure. His leadership was rooted in compassion, showing that true leadership is about being present rather than seeking fame. He actively participated in community initiatives, guided efforts, and deliberately represented diverse voices. His steadfast leadership was evident at events like the annual LGBTQ+ Seder and other inclusive gatherings, where LGBTQ+ individuals felt recognized, heard, and supported. Marc inspired me to champion inclusivity by dismantling barriers in Jewish spaces that prevent LGBTQ+ individuals from feeling a sense of belonging. He consistently sought feedback and valued conversations that challenged and refined his leadership.

Knowing Marc meant experiencing unexpected affirmations that made people feel truly seen and appreciated. He was renowned for his warmth, generosity, and endless kindness. His exceptional ability to make others feel recognized and valued was often evident even before they realized it. Whether welcoming newcomers, sincerely checking on others, or inviting you to every Queer Jewish event he attended, he constantly reminded me that in leadership, showing up and being a living example are vital to fostering conversations and creating a sense of belonging.

Marc exemplified the strength of inclusive leadership. He demonstrated, through his actions, principles of dignity, belonging, and the beauty of a diverse Jewish community. As a proud member and advocate within Baltimore’s Jewish and LGBTQ communities, Marc urged us to expand our circles, deepen our compassion, and live our values more fully.

On a personal level, Marc was a mentor, confidant, and a source of encouragement. He strongly believed in uplifting others and created space for emerging leaders to step forward with confidence and purpose. Many of us are leading today because Marc once said, “You belong here.”

Marc’s legacy endures in the communities he strengthened and the people he motivated. Let us honor him by continuing his work—showing kindness, leading bravely, and building communities rooted in love.

May his memory be a blessing, and may it continue to inspire and guide us.
